Andrews Public Library issued the following announcement on Feb. 1.
Bookmark Contest
January 9 – February 3, 2023
Age Groups: Grades K-2, Grades 3-5, Grades 6-8, Grades 9-12
One Dozen Who Care, Inc., in collaboration with Nantahala Regional Library invites students in kindergarten through 12th grade who live in Cherokee, Clay, or Graham Counties to create a bookmark for the Purel Miller African American Book Collection (PMAABC) which is housed at Andrews Public Library and the Black History Month Reading Challenge which promotes the PMAABC.
1. Obtain an entry form from your local library or download it here: https://bit.ly/3k1aqC0Only 1 entry per student, please. Entries must be original and cannot be returned after judging. Entries can be created with any medium and method you prefer (by hand or digital). Nantahala Regional Library and One Dozen Who Care, Inc. reserve the right to use winning entries for promotion and to print them as bookmarks to be distributed throughout our libraries, organizations, and events.
The following slogan and statement will be on the back of the winning bookmarks once printed: Making the Invisible, VisibleThe Purel Miller African American Book Collection (PMAABC) is housed in the Andrews (NC) Public Library, where it presents books, DVDs and audio books for adults and children. The collection reflects the presence and contributions of African Americans to the region and the nation. It is a program of One Dozen Who Care, Inc., a local nonprofit that cosponsors an annual Reading Challenge for children with the Nantahala Regional Library. The Collection upholds the group’s mission to “build bridges” among the diverse cultures that inhabit far western North Carolina.
2. Submit your entry form
a. In person at any of our branch locations.
b. Online via email. Email your entry form as a high quality PDF or JPG/PNG to brwysl20@gmail.com by 11:59pm on Friday, February 3.
Note: You will receive a reply to your entry email. If you don’t, contact your library or Bridget at 828-837-2025.
That’s the letter L in the email address not the number 1. If you need assistance submitting your entry via email, library staff will be more than happy to help.

3. Library staff and members of One Dozen Who Care, Inc. will vote on all the entries. There will be one winner in each age group. Winners will be announced on Tuesday, February 14 on Facebook. Winners will be recognized and receive their prizes at the Black History Month Reading Challenge Celebration and Awards Ceremony in mid-March.
