Each winter, hospitals in western North Carolina report an increase in patients experiencing symptoms such as congestion, coughs, fevers, body aches, and fatigue. This year is no exception, with flu, RSV, pneumonia, and the common cold affecting many residents.

Dr. Al Mina addressed community concerns by providing guidance on how to manage these illnesses. “As a physician, my goal is to provide reassurance, clarity, and practical guidance. Most winter illnesses are manageable, many are preventable, and knowing when to seek care can make a meaningful difference in recovery and outcomes,” Dr. Mina said.

He explained that several respiratory illnesses peak during colder months and their symptoms often overlap. Monitoring symptom severity and progression is important for proper care.

Dr. Mina emphasized prevention measures such as hand hygiene and staying home when sick to protect others. He also recommended mask-wearing during periods of high respiratory illness transmission or when symptomatic. Vaccination remains important for reducing the risk of severe illness from flu or pneumonia. “While vaccines don’t prevent every infection, they can significantly lessen severity and protect both individuals and the broader community,” he stated.

He added that rest, hydration, nutrition, and stress management support immune health.

Addressing when to seek medical attention, Dr. Mina said it is appropriate to visit urgent care or primary care for certain symptoms but advised emergency care for more serious conditions. He noted: “If you are ever unsure, it is always appropriate to seek medical guidance.”

Dr. Mina concluded: “Winter illness can feel overwhelming – especially when it seems like everyone around you is sick. The good news is that most people recover fully with supportive care, rest, and time. Staying informed, taking preventive steps, and knowing when to seek care can reduce anxiety and improve outcomes.”

He assured residents that local healthcare teams at Harris Regional Hospital are available for support.

Harris Regional Hospital operates as an 86-bed acute care facility in Sylva serving Jackson County as well as neighboring counties including Swain, Macon, and Graham in western North Carolina according to its official website.
