Harris Regional Hospital and Swain Community Hospital have released their community benefit report for 2024. The report outlines their support for health and economic vitality in western North Carolina in line with their mission to make communities healthier.

“Harris Regional and Swain Community Hospitals are proud to serve the people of Jackson, Swain, and the surrounding counties,” said Chief Executive Officer Ashley Hindman. “As long-standing healthcare providers and community partners, we are committed to delivering high-quality care close to home, investing in our region’s well-being, and making a positive impact on the lives of those we serve. This year’s report reflects that continued commitment—both inside and outside our hospital walls.”

The report details the hospitals’ efforts to address community needs through new providers, service expansions, and investments in facilities and technology. The hospitals added providers in fields like OB/GYN, teleneurology, teleradiology, telepsychiatry, tele-infectious disease, hospice and palliative care, podiatry, and cardiology. Investments over $4.9 million covered new equipment such as remounted ambulances, a CT scanner, ultrasound machines, and other medical tools.

Additionally, they provided over $32 million in uncompensated care and other health services. In 2024, the hospitals supported their workforce with more than $66,900,000 in salaries, wages, and benefits for about 895 employees, and invested more than $156,000 in professional development and tuition assistance.

The hospitals paid $14,766,331 in taxes while backing local programs and organizations, including partnerships with the Jackson County Chamber of Commerce, educational institutions, and health-focused foundations.

“We are honored to be part of these communities and incredibly grateful to everyone who places their trust in our care,” added Hindman. “We’re also thankful for the dedication of our physicians, staff, and volunteers who make our mission possible each day. As we look to the future, we remain focused on advancing health, improving lives, and serving our neighbors with compassion and excellence.”
