Harris Regional Hospital and Swain Community Hospital have released their 2024 Community Benefit Report, outlining their actions to enhance health and economic stability in western North Carolina. The report discusses various initiatives aimed at addressing community health needs by expanding services and investing in advanced healthcare technology.

Ashley Hindman, CEO of both hospitals, affirmed the hospitals’ dedication to the region: “Harris Regional and Swain Community Hospitals are proud to serve the people of Jackson, Swain, and the surrounding counties.” Hindman emphasized their commitment to providing “high-quality care close to home,” and highlighted the positive impact of their efforts on local communities.

Among the key advancements mentioned, the hospitals added new providers across various specialties, including OB/GYN, teleneurology, and telepsychiatry. They invested over $4.9 million in capital improvements, facilitating upgrades like new CT scanners and cardiac monitors.

The report highlights more than $32 million in uncompensated care provided by the hospitals, illustrating their mission to ensure healthcare access for all individuals, irrespective of their financial status. Employment and education also received significant attention, with $66.9 million allocated for employee salaries, and over $156,000 for professional development.

The hospitals contributed $14,766,331 to local and state taxes, reinforcing their role in regional economic support. Their community engagement extended to partnerships with educational and local organizations, which bolstered various initiatives across the area.

Ashley Hindman expressed gratitude towards the communities and the workforce: “We are honored to be part of these communities and incredibly grateful to everyone who places their trust in our care.”
