Harris Regional Hospital and Swain Community Hospital have commenced comprehensive Community Health Needs Assessments (CHNAs) in collaboration with local health professionals and community stakeholders to evaluate health issues in Jackson and Swain counties. The initiative involves two separate surveys—one for each county.
The CHNAs aim to identify health challenges, set priorities, and guide future investments. This systematic approach collects, analyzes, and interprets community health data.
Harris and Swain have conducted CHNAs every three years, with the current assessments anticipated to be completed in May. Findings will be shared with the public in a report and community presentation. “We’re excited to launch this new cycle of community health assessments and to build on the important progress we’ve made since our last CHNA,” said Ashley Hindman, CEO of Harris Regional Hospital and Swain Community Hospital.
Both assessments will incorporate new and previously gathered data. Community focus groups will be held in June for residents to discuss current health issues and potential changes. “The surveys will allow us to hear directly from the community about their concerns and ideas for improving health in Jackson and Swain counties,” said Hindman.
Strata, a research partner, supports the CHNA process through data collection and analysis. Hospital leadership and boards will review results to inform planning and service delivery. A Community Health Summit will occur in each county to examine findings and gather public input.
“Our goal is not just to produce a report, but to create a living, breathing plan that leads to meaningful action,” Hindman added.
Surveys are open for residents. The Jackson County survey is available at MyHarrisRegional.com/community-health-assessment. The Swain County survey can be found at MySwainCommunity.com/community-health-assessment.
