Harris Regional Hospital has completed its 100th Inspire sleep apnea implant procedure, marking a milestone in the hospital’s adoption of alternative treatments for obstructive sleep apnea. The Inspire procedure is performed at Harris Regional Hospital by Dr. Shawn Kosnik, an otolaryngologist with Mountain Ear, Nose & Throat Associates.
The Inspire device offers an option for patients who cannot tolerate continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy. It is currently the only FDA-approved implantable device designed to treat obstructive sleep apnea by working inside the body to address the root cause of the condition. Patients activate the device with a handheld remote before bedtime, and it delivers mild stimulation to specific airway muscles to keep airways open during sleep.
“Reaching this milestone reflects our ongoing commitment to supporting advanced, patient-centered care close to home,” said Ashley Hindman, CEO of Harris Regional Hospital. “We’re proud to support the work of specialists in our community, like Dr. Kosnik, and to offer access to innovative procedures like Inspire therapy that help patients reclaim their health and quality of life.”
Obstructive sleep apnea affects over 20 million people in the United States and can increase risks for cardiovascular disease and stroke if untreated. For those unable to use CPAP devices, Inspire therapy provides another treatment option that can improve sleep quality and reduce episodes of interrupted breathing.
The procedure at Harris Regional Hospital is conducted on an outpatient basis with support from a multidisciplinary team experienced in surgical and respiratory care.
