Harris Regional Hospital is marking a significant milestone as Judy Aikens, a lifelong resident of Whittier, celebrates 50 years of service at the hospital. Her career began in the summer following her high school graduation when she took what was intended to be a temporary job. That position became the start of a long tenure that has influenced both her life and that of her family.
Aikens’ professional journey at Harris Regional Hospital has included roles in housekeeping, supervision of sterile processing, pharmacy work, and currently as a storeroom technician. Her adaptability and commitment have been noted by colleagues throughout these years.
Her connection to Harris Regional Hospital extends beyond her own employment. Both of her twin daughters were born at the hospital and later worked within the Harris and Swain hospital system as registered nurses.
Reflecting on what has kept her at Harris for so long, Aikens said: “You can’t ask for anything better than working with a good group of people.” She emphasized the importance of camaraderie among staff, describing it as a daily support system characterized by humor, kindness, and reliability.
Aikens identified the COVID-19 pandemic as one of the most challenging periods during her time at Harris. She recalled its intensity and pressure on healthcare workers but described it as “a powerful learning experience and a testament to the strength and resilience” of her team.
Offering advice to new employees, Aikens stated: “It could be your family here in the hospital next, so treat every patient like they are your own.”
The hospital describes Aikens as more than just an employee; she is considered a cornerstone within its community. As Harris Regional Hospital approaches its centennial year serving Jackson, Swain, and surrounding counties, leaders say they are proud to honor Aikens’ five decades of dedication while reaffirming their mission to serve local communities into the future.
