The Person County Republican Party Executive Committee has decided to censure two officials from the county government. The committee, consisting of 14 members, unanimously voted to censure Commissioner Sherry Wilborn and Planning Board member Steven McFarland. This decision follows the accumulation of evidence suggesting behavior harmful to the party.
Censuring an individual is considered a significant action, especially when it involves two people. The committee’s decision was based on the actions of Wilborn and McFarland, which were deemed contrary to the interests of the local Republican Party. Such measures are taken when there is clear evidence of behavior that goes against the party or its platform.
As part of their censure, both Wilborn and McFarland will face disciplinary actions customary within the party. They are prohibited from attending any GOP meetings, activities, or events sponsored by the party for two years due to their deliberate actions.
Kathy Lawrence, Chair of the Person County GOP, expressed her disappointment over having to take such steps. “As Chair of the Person County GOP, I am saddened that the executive committee even had to consider such action in the first place to hold these individuals to account,” she stated. She emphasized that someone must oppose such divisive actions that deviate from the party’s platform and cast doubt on affiliation.
