A newly approved bill will provide more than $11 million in funding to open a second campus of the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics.
The new campus will be located in Morganton and funded through the North Carolina's reduction in death benefit employer contribution rates, reoccurring allocations and one-time revenue sources, The Center Square reported on June 4.
“The initial junior class was to enter in August '21, but because of the budget issues that we've had this past year, the School of Science and Math was unable to get the operating funds they needed to hire the people to get ready for the opening of school,” Rep. Hugh Blackwell (R-Burke) told The Center Square. “So now, the proposal is that they will open August of '22.”
North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics is the first public residential STEM high school in the nation, according to the school’s website. Its primary campus is in Durham.
