About 20.8 percent of the 2,790 degrees and certificates handed out by Western Carolina University in 2017-18 were to students in business, management, marketing, and related support services programs, making them the most popular programs that year, according to the latest disclosure from the U.S. Department of Education.

The agency's National Center for Education Statistics shows the public institution in Cullowhee conferred 428 bachelor's degrees and 151 master's degrees in business, management, marketing, and related support services programs.

But the single most popular program was for a bachelor's degree in registered nursing/registered nurse. Data shows the school gave out 206 bachelor's degrees in registered nursing/registered nurse, followed by 153 bachelor's degrees in criminal justice/safety studies and 148 bachelor's degrees in general business administration and management.

The university enrolled 11,639 students for 2017-18, including 10,027 in undergraduate programs and 1,612 in graduate programs.
