Macon County students in kindergarten through fifth grade returned to class under Plan A on Oct. 5.
The Macon County School Board voted on Sept. 28 at the recommendation of Superintendent Chris Baldwin to return the students to the classrooms, the district posted to its Facebook page. They will be in class Monday through Thursday, with remote learning held on Fridays.
On a motion by board member Fred Goldsmith and seconded by Tommy Cabe, the school board voted 5-0 to send the students at South Macon Elementary, East Franklin Elementary, Cartoogechaye Elementary and Iotla Valley Elementary, plus Mountain View Intermediate fifth grade back to the classrooms, the district said in the Facebook post.
North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper approved a limited reopening plan beginning Oct. 5.
Franklin High School, Macon Middle School, Union Academy, Macon Early College and Mountain View Intermediate School 6th grade will remain in Plan B., the Facebook page reported.
Highlands School and Nantahala School will remain in their current plan.
Under plan A, all students attend simultaneously, with teachers and older students wearing masks.
Plan B limits schools to 50% of their maximum capacity, with districts setting plans for students to alternate between in-person and remote lessons.
Plan C continues remote instruction.
