HAYESVILLE HIGH SCHOOL: Free Spring In-Person JAM program

Hayesville High School issued the following announcement on Aug. 29.

The Folk School Junior Appalachian Musicians (JAM) Program is a free, grant-funded, after-school music program.  Applications are due by Friday Sept 2nd. 

When: Sept 7-Nov 14, 2022, Monday & Wednesdays 4-5:30PM.  The session will close with a concert and dance on the evening of Tuesday Nov 15th, 2022 (time TBA) that all students are expected to attend. Other optional performance opportunities may arise. 

Where: Festival Barn on the John C. Campbell Folk School Campus (take Brasstown Rd. past the Folk School office, turn onto Farm House Rd and park in the gravel lot by the big metal barn. 

Who: 12-18 years old who reside in Clay or Cherokee Counties.   

What: The opportunity to learn traditional Appalachian music on guitar, banjo, fiddle, mandolin, or ukulele and to practice in a string band.  Everyone will be expected to participate in singing and dancing as a part of learning this traditional music.  We will also have an upright bass that the students can take turns using on site.  Teachers are all highly qualified musicians, and we will enjoy visits from several guest musicians throughout the season. 

We expect that by filling out this application, you are seriously interested in learning to play an instrument (or further your skills if you already play) and will be focused and committed to the program. You will be expected to attend all the classes and final concert and dance.  Other performances will be optional. 

The classes will be filled on a first come, first serve basis.  You will need to arrange transportation to and from the Festival Barn at the John C. Campbell Folk School.  Parents are welcome to stay onsite and observe the classes or can drop off and pick up students.
