FOIA Request to Macon County Election Department Regarding Information on Candidates for the Upcoming Spring Election on February 5, 2025.

As a media organization committed to providing comprehensive and accurate news coverage on local governmental affairs, we at Nantahala News have sent a request under the North Carolina Public Records Law, G.S. §132-1., to the Macon County Election Department. Our request seeks information about all candidates running in the upcoming spring election.

The specifics of our request include details such as the first, middle, and last names of all candidates. We also requested information about the office each candidate is running for and their jurisdiction. Additionally, we sought details about each candidate's party affiliation.

In order to provide comprehensive coverage and allow for potential follow-ups, we have also asked for contact information for each candidate. This includes their address, phone number, and email address.

As members of the media involved in gathering and reporting news to the public, access to public records is essential for us to fulfill our professional responsibilities. These responsibilities include holding public institutions accountable and providing transparency to the public. Given our role in disseminating information, we believe we are eligible for a fee waiver as media professionals.
