Swain Community Hospital has announced that Kayla Ledford, PharmD, is the recipient of its 2025 Mercy Award. This award honors one employee from each Lifepoint Health facility who significantly impacts others’ lives and exemplifies the company’s founding values.

The Mercy Award was created in 2001 to honor Scott Mercy, Lifepoint’s founding chairman and CEO. It remains the highest accolade a Lifepoint employee can receive.

“It is with great pride that we recognize Dr. Kayla Ledford for her exceptional contributions to patient care and her dedication to the Swain Community Hospital team,” stated Ashley Hindman, CEO of Harris Regional and Swain Community Hospitals. “Kayla consistently goes above and beyond, not just in her clinical expertise but in the compassion and empathy she shows to every patient she serves. Her actions reflect the very best of our mission.”

Ledford is acknowledged for her attention to detail and vigilance in maintaining patient safety. Her quick response in identifying a critical medication interaction recently highlighted her commitment to ensuring optimal patient outcomes.

What distinguishes Ledford is her profound empathy. She not only addresses clinical aspects but also meets patients’ emotional needs by spending extra time clarifying treatment plans and addressing concerns.

“Kayla’s dedication to patient care goes beyond what is required,” said Al Newkirk, R.Ph., director of pharmacy at Harris Regional and Swain Community Hospitals. “She is not only an outstanding pharmacist but a compassionate advocate for our patients. Her contributions are invaluable, and she continuously leads by example.”

Beyond her clinical duties, Ledford collaborates with providers and nursing staff for coordinated care. During Hurricane Helene, she volunteered without hesitation to ensure patients received necessary medications during the crisis.

Ledford’s selfless approach makes her a model representative of what the Mercy Award signifies. The hospital acknowledges her exceptional work and dedication.

Ledford will be considered for the companywide Lifepoint Mercy Award, with results announced this summer at a ceremony in Nashville, TN.
