With many processing plants shuttering because of COVID-19 fears, the number of people seeking to have their animals processed is increasing.
Scott Baucom at Fence Row Farms fears a warning from Tyson Foods, which he told WBTV is “a big integrator with the poultry and the beef industry,” the U.S. supply plain will be missing millions of pounds of meat could lead to a lengthy waiting game.
“That’s alarming, because that’s a big entity,” he told the station.
According to the United Food and Commercial Workers, a combined 35% of meat production has now been shuttered. Dr. Mandy Cohen, Secretary of the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services, said her agency and local hospital systems have tested plants because of their importance to the state’s food chain.
The U.S. Department of Labor established new guidelines for workers at processing plants currently operating, including, but not limited to social distancing, donning of PPE and temperature checks.
