The indicted former director of the Department of Social Services in Cherokee County can return to work, a department official said.
Cindy Palmer was indicted in May for alleged unlawful actions that transpired while she was in charge of the Department of Social Services, the Carolina Public Press reported on June 18. Despite the indictment, Palmer will be allowed to keep her job as a business officer at the department.
Amanda McGee, Department of Social Services director, said since Palmer's alleged wrongful actions did not occur during her current position in the agency, North Carolina personnel law would not allow for Palmer to be fired from her job, the Carolina Public Press reported.
Palmer, along with two other former Department of Social Services officials, is facing indictments for more than three dozen alleged felonies and misdemeanors that were brought by a grand jury in May, the Carolina Public Press reported. Pamer was suspended as the director in 2018 and immediately took the position of business director.
