North Carolina's recently-passed $1.1 billion Coronavirus Relief Package included approximately $4 million in funding to assist with expanding broadband Internet service to state residents.
State Rep. Kevin Corbin (R-Macon) said in a September Facebook post that he is "proud to have voted" for the legislation, which included $344,447 to help Sky Wave Inc. to expand broadband and improve connectivity in Graham County.
"As more and more of our day-to-day life, business and services have moved online to adapt to the pandemic, many North Carolinians are faced with the added challenge of not having access to affordable, reliable high-speed internet," Corbin quoted from Thomas Parrish, acting Norths Carolina Department of Information Technology secretary and state chief information officer. "These grants will help lessen that disparity and bring the necessary infrastructure and connectivity to our communities and to thousands of residents who desperately need it."
Corbin said these broadband projects should connect approximately 3,000 private residences and nearly 200 businesses in various sectors.
"There is still a lot of work that needs to be done across the state in terms of broadband, but this is a great step in the right direction," Corbin posted.
