State Senate Republicans are challenging a deal made to rewrite state election laws, claiming that the North Carolina Attorney General is hiding something, the Carolina Journal reported.
The North Carolina State Board of Elections provided the General Assembly with thousands of documents related to a settlement in September that Republicans alleged makes voter fraud easier, the Carolina Journal reported in October.
"It's a sad day when our state's top law enforcement officer refuses to comply with the law," Sen. Warren Daniel (R-Burke) said in a statement, the Carolina Journal reported. "Exactly what written communications between Josh Stein and Marc Elias does the Attorney General want to hide from the public? If Attorney General Stein's attempt to undo state election fraud laws by secretly settling with a Democratic Party power lawyer weren't bad enough, it now seems like he's covering it up by refusing to comply with state transparency laws."
Republicans have been highly critical of a legal settlement that changed specific requirements related to absentee voting. In particular, the settlement removed the legislatively-approved witness signature requirement on absentee ballots. The Board of Elections decision allowed a ballot submitted without the witness signature and provided a chance for the voter to correct the missing information.
The outcome of the settlement has been under court review.
