The Georgia/North Carolina Bartram Trail Society and the U.S. Forest Service have partnered to bring a youth component to the 110-mile trail maintenance, the Macon County News reported.

A society member and volunteer and the Forest Service provided a $10,000 grant for hiring a youth trail work crew for six weeks for Summer 2021, the Macon County News reported in September

"We are working to create volunteer days for this section this fall for Franklin High School students who are interested in learning trail skills that will build their abilities to work on a crew next summer," Brent Martin, the director of the Bartram Trail Society, said, the Macon County News reported.

The organizations hope the program will spark a long-term interest in natural resource management or outdoor recreation for youth, the news media reported.

"We have also received funding from the National Wilderness Stewardship Alliance to repair trail tread on the trail starting at Wallace Branch near Franklin and on to Wayah Bald," Martin said, the Macon County News reported.
